From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
The school year has come in like a storm! New and returning
students were greeted with a Welcome Back Barbeque last week and
Inspirational Tshuva Drashot this week, in anticipation of
the quickly approaching High Holidays. Despite all this excitement,
even we at WYHS can't ignore the meteorological storms that have
threatened our state.
Please read WYHS' new Protocols for Closing School
(which are available as a link below) immediately, as they may be
relevant for the beginning of next week.
Meet the Teacher Night and the College Application
Seminar for seniors and their parents will take place, G-d
willing, this coming Monday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. If "Ivan"
creates a need to reschedule it, the evening will take place one
week later on Monday, September 20.
As Rosh Hashanah approaches, let's make sure that the
lessons of hurricanes are not lost upon us- the critical
importance of advance preparation, how little in our lives is
ultimately under our control, and as Rabbi Frand quoted the Chofetz
Chaim on Wednesday night, the damage that a mere wind (read:
lashon hara) can do.
Yeshiva High-lites will next appear on Erev Yom
Kippur, Friday, September 24.
Wishing you and yours a Shabbat Shalom and a Happy and
Healthy New Year,
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell Principal

Wednesday night's Kinus Tshuva was a huge
success, beginning the new school year as well as the yom
tov season on the right foot!
Immediately after school on Wednesday, all students ate
dinner at the homes of their teachers -- the boys went to
their gemara rebbeim and the girls to their chumash teachers.
From barbecue to baked ziti, everyone enjoyed the
delicious meals served up by the teachers!
Following dinner, the students returned to school for a
special shiur by world renown educator Rabbi Dovid
Orlovsky, who teaches at Ohr Sameach as well as other
yeshivot in Israel, and is famous for delivering his
inspirational messages with a healthy dose of humor!
The members of Rabbi Horowitz's gemara shiur and
Mrs. Kanner's senior chumash shiur had a slightly
different evening! Dinner -- girls at the home of senior Atara
Aroll, and boys at the home of junior Daniel Poliak -- was
followed by a shiur from internationally acclaimed
author and lecturer Rabbi Yissocher Frand of Ner Yisrael
in Baltimore.
Both speakers delivered messages that were
thought-provoking and inspirational for students of
WYHS, setting the tone for the upcoming days of Rosh Hashana
and Yom Kippur.
Thank you to the Judaic faculty and the Arolls and
Poliaks for hosting students for dinner as part of this
important event!

What a Great Beginning |
|
The new school year has gotten off to a fantastic
start! Even before classes officially began, two successful
days of orientation helped kick off the new year with a
bang!
For the first time ever, freshman orientation was a two-
day event! New ninth graders learned about improving their
study and organizational skills to help make the transition
from middle school to high school. In addition, the
freshmen heard presentations by the WYHS student council about
joining committees, getting involved with school spirit, and
participating in school sports!
The ninth graders had the opportunity to bond as a
class with an enlightening icebreaker and a pizza and ice
cream lunch on day one!
Returning students also enjoyed their day-long
orientation, receiving their schedules and textbooks and
getting to know the transfer students who have joined
their respective classes this year. All four grades heartily
enjoyed a delicious barbecue before going home to get ready
for their first day of classes!
Yeshiva Storm sports also got underway before school
officially began! The girls varsity volleyball team
played a very close preseason game against the Alexander S.
Gross Hebrew Academy, winning one game but ultimately losing
the match by just a few points!
The boys varsity soccer team also played an
early season game the day before classes began, and were
defeated 2-0 after playing incredibly well the entire game!

Shifting Into High Gear |

All tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders are invited
and encouraged to participate in a special 9/11 memorial
and selichos program this Saturday night, September
11, at 9:30 p.m. at the Aish center in Hollywood, located at
4010 N. 46th Avenue. There will be a bus leaving school at
9:15 p.m. and returning after the program.
Next week, there is school on Monday and Tuesday
only! There will be no school from Wednesday through
Friday in honor of Rosh Hashanah.
Even though it is a short week, it is a very busy one!
American Idol returns to WYHS on Monday after school!
Anyone interested in auditioning for the school band should
bring their instrument to the tryouts on Monday.
Monday night (September 13) is the rescheduled Meet the
Teacher Night at 7:30 p.m. In addition to meeting the
teachers and learning more about the classes at WYHS, parents
will receive information on how to access their child's grades
and progress reports on the Internet via Edline. There will be
a mincha minyan at the Boca Raton Synagogue at 7:15
p.m., and we will daven maariv at the conclusion of the
program.
In conjunction with Monday's Meet the Teacher Night, all
seniors and their parents are asked to attend a mandatory
information session about the college application process,
also beginning at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday (September 14), there will be a girls
varsity volleyball game against the Donna Klein Jewish
Academy at 5 p.m. at the JCC in Boca Raton. Fans are welcome,
as always, to come out and show support for all the WYHS
sports teams!

Yom Kippur, Succot and
Beyond |
|
There will be no school on Friday, September 24,
which is Erev Yom Kippur.
Senior girls and their parents should plan to attend
Israel Night on Monday, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. Don't
miss this excellent opportunity to learn firsthand about the
post-high school seminary programs in Israel! The boys schools
are not being addressed that evening due to the fact that the
recruitment season for boys yeshivot is later in the year.
On Tuesday, September 28, all WYHS students are invited to
stay after school to help decorate the BRS Sukkah. Join
your fellow students as well as members of JARC, a group of
developmentally disabled adults and young adults, in what
promises to be a very lively event!
Sukkot vacation begins on Wednesday, September 29
and ends on Sunday, October 10. School will resume on Monday,
October 11 at the regular time of 8 a.m.
To enable parents to vote on Election Day and to
maintain our practice of running conferences on two different
nights of the week so everyone can attend, the fall Parent
Teacher Conferences have been moved to Monday, November 1
(A-K) and Tuesday, November 9 (L-Z), as opposed to November 2
and 10. There will be a Friday schedule on Monday, November 1
with a 2:30 p.m. dismissal, and a regular schedule on
Wednesday, November 10.
